Too busy living to be writing lately. To my devoted blog readers, I apologize.
My thoughts on current or not so current events:
Don Imus - I don’t listen to him much, but I know his reputation as a "shock jock" that focuses more on the political front than not-so-fellow "shock jock", Howard Stern. His comments on the Rutgers team did not faze me a bit as I feel I am pretty much up to date on the current lingual exhibited by today’s hip-hop "artists".
So, he got canned. Not a surprise either. You see, today we hold each other to double standards. In this case, the ever so "righteous" and vocal reverends, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, felt they were disparaging racial remarks that should not have been said on radio, much less anywhere else. I agree, but to a point. But the real point is who has not heard of those words before? Reality check: It’s on TV and in movies. The same words are belted out loud and proud in rap lyrics.
What it ultimately comes down to is negative publicity, and metaphorically speaking, a bit of a hostage situation. CBS pulled the plug on Imus because Sharpton and Jackson threatened to set up camp in front of their offices with bands of "moral" demonstrators that were guaranteed to make a big scene. Obviously, CBS does not want any negative press, especially negative press that can drag on and on. As such, the easiest thing to do is axe the guy who said it.
The double standard? First and foremost, let me just state that I’m not for what Imus said on air. But I find it a little difficult to comprehend why Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are not leading a picket line in front of rap studios and record labels, and going on TV to slam music artists (many of which are black) that use the same type of language.
And for god’s sake, what the hell do people mean when they say, "Only black people can say the N word? If the word has such a negative connotation, why do black people say it amongst one another?
Virgina Tech - Sad. Cho Seung Hui was a damn fool who watched too many Quentin Tarantino movies. Man, if your life sucked so much, move to Africa and see how sucky life is there!
Did I mention he looks a lot like my friend, Mikey?
What’s going on with me?
Loose Cannons softball - We are now 5-1. We beat the team we needed to beat in order to force at least a tiebreaker at the end of the season. My teammates played hard and instilled some confidence back in me towards them. They knew what was on the line and played their hearts out. I saw the determination and focus in their eyes, and knew that win or lose, we were going to fight until there was no more fight in us.
Demons softball - We are now 5-2. After an 0-2 start that I attribute to me not hitting well, (4 for 9), we have won 5 in a row and I have been 15 for my last 15.
Other softball news - Sold 2 of my bats (Anderson Techzilla Composite Killer and Mizuno Techfire Fury). Made $160 bucks. Bought the new DeMarini F3. Needs 200+ hits to break in. That will take a while…
Steve and Kristie’s Wedding - Cute couple. Steve’s sort of a head in the clouds good guy (well, at least to me). He’s a good friend and softball teammate, and I am so happy for the both of them.
At their wedding they played a lot of old slow songs. Brought back some memories of my early teen years. And as always, I downloaded them and this is what I’m listening to now:
"If You Go Away" - Jordan Knight and Joey McIntyre
"All I Do Is Think of You" - Troop
"Right Combination" - Seiko and Donnie Wahlberg
Mother’s Day - Al and I threw a potluck lunch at our place. Whipped out the new grill also. It was fun having everyone over as always.
Workout/Gymkata - Zero, Zip, Zilch… Haven’t set foot in the gym in 3 weeks. I feel weak.
Earth, Wind & Fire Concert at Lake Tahoe - I’m going! July 13th. gotta check these guys out before they get too old and croak. Their music bings generations, young and old. My parents like their music and a lot of my friends do as well. Can’t help it. It’s feel good music.
My one week in San Diego - It was fun but tiring. I was with several of my work colleagues. I had a lot of time to relax and escape the trivial issues of life at home… likes making dinner, commuting to work, household chores, and fighting with Al over the TV. ;-D
